Rear Window Replacement Birmingham

Rear Window Replacement in Birmingham

Rear window replacement in Birmingham covers the back screen on cars, estates, hatchbacks and vans. Rear glass is toughened, so it shatters completely rather than cracking, and most screens carry a heated demister grid and often the radio aerial. AI Auto Glass matches the replacement to your vehicle’s specification and clears the fragments.

Open Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 20:00Evening slots available, so the vehicle can be dealt with after work rather than during it.

Why is rear glass more complicated than it looks?

Checking trim and glass position after fitting

The thin orange lines across your back screen aren’t decoration. That’s a printed heating element for demisting, and on a lot of vehicles the radio or DAB aerial is printed into the same pane.

So a rear screen isn’t a shape, it’s a component. Two cars of the same model and year can take different glass depending on whether they left the factory with a heated screen, an aerial, privacy tint, a wiper or a high level brake light.

Will my heated rear screen still work afterwards?

Yes, provided the replacement is specified correctly and the connections are remade properly. The demister works through two tabs bonded to the glass, and those get reconnected as part of the fitting.

We test the demister before finishing. If it doesn’t come on, that’s found while we’re still there rather than on the first cold morning.

What about my radio reception?

If your aerial is printed into the rear screen, a replacement without that element will cost you reception. It’s one of the more common complaints after a cheap rear glass job.

Tell us if your aerial is in the glass, or just send the registration and we’ll check. It changes which part gets ordered.

Who needs rear window replacement, and who doesn’t

Break-in through the back

Common on estates and vans where the load area is visible. The vehicle isn’t secure until it’s glazed.

Reversing and impact damage

Hitting a post, a low branch or a wall. Often takes the wiper or brake light with it.

Sudden failure with no impact

Toughened glass can let go from old edge damage or stress. It feels random. It usually isn’t.

Vans with barn doors

Two smaller panes rather than one screen, so only the damaged side normally needs replacing.

When it isn’t a glass job

If the screen is intact and only the demister has stopped working, that’s usually a broken connector tab or a severed element line, and it can often be repaired without new glass. Don’t let anyone sell you a rear screen for a demister fault until the glass itself has been checked.

What happens during the replacement

1

We identify the screen from your registration

Heating, aerial, wiper, tint, brake light, camera. Each of these changes the part number.

2

The car gets protected and cleared

Boot, parcel shelf, seat backs and channels. Fragments travel further than people expect on a rear screen.

3

The old glass and seal come out

Bonded screens are cut out like a windscreen. Older gasket-fitted screens come out with the rubber.

4

The aperture is prepared

The bonding surface is cleaned back so the new screen seats and seals properly. Skipping this is what causes leaks later.

5

The new screen goes in and gets connected

Positioned, bonded or sealed, and the heated element reconnected.

6

Everything gets tested

Demister on, wiper through its arc, brake light working. Then safe drive away time if the screen is bonded.

How long until I can drive?

If the screen is bonded, the same rule applies as a windscreen: the adhesive has to reach its safe drive away strength first, and that depends on the product and the conditions on the day.

Gasket-fitted screens have no cure time. The technician tells you which yours is and what the wait looks like before starting.

Can you do it at my house?

Usually, where there’s room to work behind the vehicle and somewhere the interior can be protected. Wind and rain matter more for a bonded screen than a side window.

What does rear window replacement cost in Birmingham?

A plain rear screen and a heated screen with an integrated aerial and privacy tint are different parts at genuinely different prices. Anyone quoting before checking your registration is estimating.

We price per vehicle, but here is where the UK market sits in 2026 so you can judge any quote, ours included.

WhatTypical 2026 UK figureSource
Car window replacement£100 to £200 for many vehiclesRAC, citing whocanfixmycar
Independent glazier average, windscreens£243myWindscreen, 2026
National chain average, windscreens£659myWindscreen, 2026

Rear glass sits below windscreen pricing on most vehicles because there is no bonding, no adhesive and no calibration involved. RAC puts typical car window replacement at £100 to £200, though privacy glass, heated panes and glass with an aerial printed into it run higher.

Check your excess before you claim

This is the range where an insurance claim often costs more than paying directly. If your glass excess is £75 to £150, a claim on a pane in this bracket can leave you out of pocket and still on record. Compare the two before you phone the insurer.

Why can you not quote before seeing my registration?

Because the pane is the price. Front door, rear door and quarter glass are separate parts, left and right differ, and tint, heating or an aerial change the part number again.

Send the registration and which window went, and you get the real figure rather than a range that moves later.

Figures are published UK market data from RAC and myWindscreen, not AI Auto Glass prices. They are here so you can sanity-check any quote you are given.

Is it worth claiming on insurance?

Check your glass excess before you call the insurer. Rear screens sit in a range where the excess can be close to the cost of the job, which makes claiming pointless.

Glass cover also varies on whether it extends beyond the windscreen. Some policies cover the windscreen only. Read yours rather than assuming.

Before we arrive

Don’t clear the boot out completely if the glass has gone into it, because more will fall through when the remaining pane is removed. Move anything valuable or absorbent, leave the rest.

If the car has to sit outside overnight with no back screen, tell us when you call. An open load area is a security problem and a wet interior is a bigger repair than the glass.

What glass do you fit?

OEE glass: original equipment equivalent. It is made to the same specification as the screen your vehicle left the factory with, often by the same manufacturers who supply the car makers, without the vehicle brand logo etched in the corner.

That logo is a large part of the price difference. OEE meets the same safety standards and reproduces the bracket positions, tint band and optical clarity your vehicle needs, which is why most independent glaziers fit it and why main dealer glass costs what it does.

There are vehicles where genuine OEM is worth paying for, usually Head Up Display screens and some acoustic screens on premium German cars, where the optical tolerances are tighter. If yours is one of them we will tell you rather than quietly fitting OEE and hoping you do not notice.

What we guarantee

Our fitting is guaranteed against water leaks, wind noise, bonding failure and workmanship. If any of those appear after we have replaced your glass, call us and we will come back and put it right. Read the guarantee.
