Is mobile fitting as good as a workshop?

Mobile vehicle glass replacement at a customer location in Birmingham

For the fitting itself, yes. Same glass, same adhesive, same process. The screen doesn’t know where it’s being bonded.

The honest difference is control over conditions. A workshop is dry and still. A driveway in February isn’t. Temperature and moisture affect how automotive adhesive cures, so the question isn’t whether mobile is worse, it’s whether the conditions on your particular day and your particular location are suitable.

So when would you say no to mobile fitting?

Heavy rain with nowhere sheltered. A very exposed spot in strong wind. Somewhere we can’t open the doors fully or reach all four sides of the screen. Occasionally a very cold morning with no cover.

We’d rather move the appointment than bond a screen into conditions that compromise it. If your location won’t work, you hear that when you book, not when we arrive.

What does my parking actually need to allow?

Room to open both front doors fully, clear access around the front of the vehicle, a reasonably level surface, and somewhere the bodywork can be protected.

A driveway, a workplace car park space with a gap either side, or a yard all work. A tight terraced street with cars bumper to bumper usually doesn’t.

Who mobile fitting is for, and who should skip it

Damage in your line of sight

If the crack sits where you look through, driving to a fitting centre is the thing you should be avoiding.

One car households

No second vehicle means getting it there and back is its own problem.

Vans and working vehicles

Tools and stock stay where they are. See van windscreen replacement.

Shift workers

The car sits at home or at work all day anyway. Use that.

When a workshop is the better answer

If your only parking is a busy public road, or the vehicle has corrosion around the screen aperture that needs proper attention, or the forecast is bad and the job can’t wait, workshop conditions are genuinely better. We’ll tell you that rather than take the booking.

What happens when we come to you

1

You send registration, postcode and photos

The registration tells us the glass specification. The photos tell us the damage. The postcode tells us the location.

2

We identify the correct screen

From the vehicle specification, not the model name. Two identical looking cars can need different glass.

3

We check your location will work

Space, surface, shelter. Confirmed before the appointment, not on arrival.

4

The vehicle is protected and the old screen removed

Dash, trim and paint covered, then the bonded glass cut out and the aperture inspected.

5

The bonding area is prepared

Cleaned and primed properly. Your windscreen is structural, so the bond is the job.

6

New glass fitted, checked, and drive away time given

Mouldings, wipers and sensors refitted and tested, then the actual safe drive away time for that installation.

How long does it take, and when can I drive?

Vehicle glass bonded to the body using automotive adhesive

The fitting is usually a couple of hours. The wait afterwards is the part nobody can shorten.

We bond with Sika polyurethane. Sika are clear that their glass adhesives have different minimum drive away times, and that the figure depends on which product is used and the conditions during fitting.

The 30 minute claim

You’ll see fitters advertise a flat “drive away in 30 minutes”. That figure belongs to a specific adhesive under specific conditions, not to every car on every day. Your safe drive away time gets confirmed for your installation. If someone gives you a number before knowing your vehicle or the weather, they’re quoting marketing.

Does a camera on my windscreen change the timing?

Yes. A vehicle with a forward facing camera may need calibration after replacement, and that adds time on top of the fitting and the cure.

Tell us at the quote stage if you have lane assist, emergency braking or adaptive cruise. It gets planned into the slot instead of found on the day.

Can I sit in the car while you work?

No, and not for the reason people assume. The doors need to be openable, the interior gets covered, and slamming a door with a freshly bonded screen can move it before the adhesive has taken.

Same reason we ask you not to slam doors for the rest of that day.

What does mobile windscreen replacement cost in Birmingham?

Mobile and workshop fitting are priced on the same thing: the glass your vehicle actually needs. A base model screen and one with a heated element, rain sensor and camera bracket are different parts with a real gap between them.

If a quote is dramatically below the others, ask what glass it’s for and whether calibration is included. That’s usually where the difference is hiding.

We quote per vehicle, but you should not have to call round to find out roughly where the market sits. Here is what published UK data says for 2026, so you can judge any quote you receive, including ours.

WhatTypical 2026 UK figureSource

ADAS static calibration£150 to £250Published calibration guides
ADAS dynamic calibration£200 to £350Published calibration guides

The gap between the two averages is the part worth reading twice. myWindscreen put the 2026 average at £243 from independent glaziers against £659 from the national chains for comparable vehicles. Same glass standards, different overheads.

What actually moves your number

Vehicle make, model and year. Whether the screen carries a rain sensor, heating, acoustic layer, camera or Head Up Display. Whether the correct glass is in stock. On anything built from roughly 2018, whether the car needs camera calibration, which is the single largest add-on.

Why will you not just publish one price?

Because a single figure would be wrong for most people who read it. A base hatchback screen and a heated, camera-equipped screen for a newer estate are different parts with a real gap between them, and quoting one number would mean revising it once we saw your registration.

Send the registration and you get the actual figure for your car, not a headline that changes on the phone.

How do I tell if a cheap quote is genuinely cheap?

Ask three things: which glass specification it covers, whether calibration is included if your car needs it, and what the safe drive away time is for the adhesive being used.

A quote well below the ranges above usually differs on one of those three, not on goodwill.

Figures above are published UK market data from myWindscreen and published UK cost guides, not AI Auto Glass prices. They are here so you can sanity-check any quote. Ours is confirmed against your vehicle before any work is booked.

What glass do you fit?

OEE glass: original equipment equivalent. It is made to the same specification as the screen your vehicle left the factory with, often by the same manufacturers who supply the car makers, without the vehicle brand logo etched in the corner.

That logo is a large part of the price difference. OEE meets the same safety standards and reproduces the bracket positions, tint band and optical clarity your vehicle needs, which is why most independent glaziers fit it and why main dealer glass costs what it does.

There are vehicles where genuine OEM is worth paying for, usually Head Up Display screens and some acoustic screens on premium German cars, where the optical tolerances are tighter. If yours is one of them we will tell you rather than quietly fitting OEE and hoping you do not notice.

What we guarantee
