Why does a van screen cost more than a car screen?

Replacement windscreen fitted to a van in Birmingham

Mostly surface area. A van windscreen is bigger, flatter and more vertical, which means more glass, a larger bonded perimeter and more weight to place accurately in one go.

Flat glass is also less forgiving. A curved car screen self-centres slightly as it drops into the aperture. A big flat van screen does not, so getting it square first time matters more.

Do I need to empty the van first?

No. We need the cab reachable and room to work around the front of the vehicle, but the load area can stay as it is. Nobody expects a plumber to unload a van to get a screen fitted.

What does help is clearing the dash and passenger footwell, since that’s where the old glass ends up.

Can you come to a job site rather than my house?

Yes, provided the site allows it and you can authorise work happening there. Building sites and industrial units usually can. Multi-storey car parks and tight street parking usually can’t.

Describe the site when you call and we’ll tell you before booking rather than after arriving.

Who this is for

Sole traders and trades

The van is the business. A day off the road costs more than the glass does.

Delivery and courier drivers

Damage mid-round is a route problem. Fitting gets arranged around the working day where it can be.

Small fleets

Several vans at one site handled together. See commercial fleet glass.

Lease and hire vehicles

Glass specification matters at handback. Check the agreement before choosing on price alone.

The honest limit on mobile van work

A bonded screen needs the adhesive to cure in reasonable conditions. Driving rain, a windy exposed yard or a very cold morning can make on-site fitting the wrong call that day. We would rather move the appointment than fit a screen into conditions that compromise the bond.

What happens on the day

1

Registration and equipment check

Rain sensor, heated screen, camera or Head Up Display. Vans vary more by trim than people expect.

2

Site assessment

Room to work all round the screen, and somewhere the paint and cab can be protected.

3

Cab protection

Dash, seats, trim and the front wings covered before anything is cut.

4

Old screen removed

The bonded glass is cut out and the aperture checked for corrosion, which is more common on working vans.

5

Bonding area prepared

Cleaned and primed. The windscreen is a structural part of the body, not a window.

6

New screen fitted and checked

Mouldings, wipers and sensors refitted and tested, then your safe drive away time.

Does my van need ADAS calibration?

If it has a camera mounted behind the windscreen for lane keeping or emergency braking, then yes, where the manufacturer specifies it. Plenty of 2018-onward vans do.

Pilkington notes that even a small change in camera position during replacement can affect how the system performs, and that a camera can run on wrong parameters without lighting a dashboard warning. No warning light is not proof it’s fine.

How long is the van off the road?

The fitting itself is a few hours. The part you can’t compress is the adhesive reaching safe drive away strength, which depends on the product and the weather.

If the van has a camera needing calibration, add time for that. Tell us up front so it’s planned into the slot rather than discovered on the day.

Cheapest is rarely cheapest on a working vehicle. A screen fitted with the wrong specification, a sensor left unconnected or a bond compromised by weather turns into a second day off the road, and that second day costs more than the difference in the quote.

Van screens are priced on the same factors as car screens, with size and specification doing most of the work. Published UK market data for 2026 gives you a reference point before you ring anyone.

National chain average£659myWindscreen, 2026
ADAS static calibration£150 to £250Published calibration guides
ADAS dynamic calibration£200 to £350Published calibration guides

Van screens generally sit above the standard car figures because the glass is larger, and a camera-equipped van adds calibration on top. myWindscreen put the 2026 independent average at £243 against £659 from the national chains, which is the gap worth knowing when a van is off the road and you are choosing on the phone.

The number that actually matters on a working van

Downtime. A quote that is fifty pounds cheaper but puts the van back a second day because the wrong screen arrived costs you more than the difference. Ask what glass specification the price covers and whether calibration is included before comparing.

Do you charge extra for coming to our site?

Site work is quoted as part of the job rather than bolted on afterwards. What changes the figure is access and whether the location allows safe work, not the mileage.

Send the site postcode with the registration and you get one number covering the whole thing.

What glass do you fit?

OEE glass: original equipment equivalent. It is made to the same specification as the screen your vehicle left the factory with, often by the same manufacturers who supply the car makers, without the vehicle brand logo etched in the corner.

That logo is a large part of the price difference. OEE meets the same safety standards and reproduces the bracket positions, tint band and optical clarity your vehicle needs, which is why most independent glaziers fit it and why main dealer glass costs what it does.

There are vehicles where genuine OEM is worth paying for, usually Head Up Display screens and some acoustic screens on premium German cars, where the optical tolerances are tighter. If yours is one of them we will tell you rather than quietly fitting OEE and hoping you do not notice.

What we guarantee

Our fitting is guaranteed against water leaks, wind noise, bonding failure and workmanship. If any of those appear after we have replaced your glass, call us and we will come back and put it right. Read the guarantee.
