Side Window Replacement Birmingham

Side Window Replacement in Birmingham

Side window replacement in Birmingham covers car and van door glass, quarter glass and fixed panes. Side windows are toughened, so they shatter completely instead of cracking and can’t be repaired. AI Auto Glass fits replacement panes at your home or workplace, and clears the broken glass from inside the door.

Why can’t a side window be repaired?

Vehicle glass being prepared for replacement

Because it isn’t built like a windscreen. Your windscreen is laminated: two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer, which is why it cracks and stays in one piece. Side glass is toughened instead, and toughened glass is designed to fail completely.

When it goes, the whole pane releases at once into small blunt fragments. That’s deliberate, and it’s far safer than sharp shards in a collision. It also means there’s nothing left to repair. Anyone offering to repair a shattered side window is describing something else.

How do I know if my car has laminated side glass?

Some newer and higher-spec vehicles use laminated door glass for security or road noise. If yours is laminated, damage tends to look like a windscreen crack rather than a pile of fragments, and the pane usually stays in the door.

You don’t need to work it out yourself. Send your registration and we’ll check the specification before ordering anything.

My window is scratched, not broken. Do I need a new one?

Often not. Light scratching from a worn seal or a car wash is cosmetic and doesn’t affect safety or security. Replacing a pane for scratching is usually money you don’t need to spend.

Deep scoring is different, particularly at the edges, because toughened glass fails from edge damage. Send a photo and we’ll tell you honestly which one you’re looking at.

Who this is for, and who it isn’t

Anyone who’s been broken into

The most common reason people call. The car isn’t secure or dry until the pane is back in.

Van owners and trades

Door glass gone means tools sitting in an open vehicle overnight. Usually the most urgent version of this job.

Taxi and private hire drivers

A missing side window takes the vehicle off the road for licensing and passenger comfort, not just weather.

Anyone with edge damage

A chip at the edge of a pane can turn into a full failure later. Worth dealing with before it does.

When you probably don’t need us

If the glass is intact and only the window mechanism has failed, that’s an auto-electrical or regulator repair, not a glazing job. We’ll say so rather than sell you a pane you don’t need. Same if the damage is surface scratching on otherwise sound glass.

What actually happens during the replacement

1

We identify the exact pane

Front door, rear door and quarter glass are all different parts, and so are left and right. Make, model, year and position, checked from your registration.

2

The door card comes off

Reaching the regulator and the glass channel means removing the interior trim panel. This is why side glass takes longer than people expect.

3

The broken glass gets cleared

Fragments end up in the door cavity, the runners, the door seal and your footwell. Leaving them there is what causes a new pane to scratch or a window to jam later.

4

The new pane is fitted and aligned

The glass is set into the regulator and aligned so it seals against the rubber and travels straight.

5

We run the window and refit the trim

Full travel up and down, checked before the door card goes back on.

Will you clear the glass out of the door?

Yes, and it matters more than it sounds. Toughened fragments collect in the bottom of the door skin and in the window runners. Left there, they rattle, they can score the new pane, and they can jam the regulator weeks later.

If a quote seems unusually cheap, this is often the step that isn’t included.

How long does side window replacement take?

Usually shorter than a windscreen, because there’s no bonding and no adhesive cure time. You can drive as soon as the door is back together.

The variable is the clearing, not the fitting. A clean break takes less time than a forced entry that’s put glass through the whole door and cabin.

How much does side window replacement cost in Birmingham?

There isn’t one price, and anyone quoting you before checking your registration is guessing. Door glass for a common hatchback and privacy glass for a van with a heated element are different parts at different costs.

We price per vehicle, but here is where the UK market sits in 2026 so you can judge any quote, ours included.

WhatTypical 2026 UK figureSource
Car window replacement£100 to £200 for many vehiclesRAC, citing whocanfixmycar
Independent glazier average, windscreens£243myWindscreen, 2026
National chain average, windscreens£659myWindscreen, 2026

Side glass sits below windscreen pricing on most vehicles because there is no bonding, no adhesive and no calibration involved. RAC puts typical car window replacement at £100 to £200, though privacy glass, heated panes and glass with an aerial printed into it run higher.

Check your excess before you claim

This is the range where an insurance claim often costs more than paying directly. If your glass excess is £75 to £150, a claim on a pane in this bracket can leave you out of pocket and still on record. Compare the two before you phone the insurer.

Why can you not quote before seeing my registration?

Because the pane is the price. Front door, rear door and quarter glass are separate parts, left and right differ, and tint, heating or an aerial change the part number again.

Send the registration and which window went, and you get the real figure rather than a range that moves later.

Figures are published UK market data from RAC and myWindscreen, not AI Auto Glass prices. They are here so you can sanity-check any quote you are given.

Should I claim on insurance for a side window?

Check your excess first. Side glass is often cheaper than the windscreen excess on a comprehensive policy, which means claiming can cost you more than paying directly and still affect your policy.

Glass cover terms differ between insurers, so read what yours actually says about side and rear glass rather than assuming it matches windscreen cover.

Can you fit it at my home or work?

Yes, where there’s room to open the door fully and work alongside the vehicle. Side glass is more forgiving than a windscreen because there’s no adhesive curing in the open air.

After a break-in

Two things are worth knowing before you call anyone. Photograph the damage before it’s touched if you intend to claim or report it, because once the glass is out the evidence is gone. And don’t vacuum the footwell before we arrive if the door is still full of fragments, since more will fall through when the pane is removed.

The vehicle isn’t secure until the glass is back. If you can’t park it somewhere safe overnight, say so when you call so we can tell you honestly whether we can reach you in time or whether temporary boarding is the sensible move first.

What glass do you fit?

OEE glass: original equipment equivalent. It is made to the same specification as the screen your vehicle left the factory with, often by the same manufacturers who supply the car makers, without the vehicle brand logo etched in the corner.

That logo is a large part of the price difference. OEE meets the same safety standards and reproduces the bracket positions, tint band and optical clarity your vehicle needs, which is why most independent glaziers fit it and why main dealer glass costs what it does.

There are vehicles where genuine OEM is worth paying for, usually Head Up Display screens and some acoustic screens on premium German cars, where the optical tolerances are tighter. If yours is one of them we will tell you rather than quietly fitting OEE and hoping you do not notice.

What we guarantee
